This morning I received a text from the family of missing fisherman Beto. The Marc-Cris, his boat, was found 70 miles off-shore adrift. Beto, his son Joven and family friend Nonoy have disappeared at sea. Sadly, this is the fate of many a fisherman world-wide, and in fact, the weather and sea have taken other fishermen from nearby towns during the same storm. Nearly all these families are now without their main source of income, meager as it is. Their stories and their lives will be kept alive by the families… I am honored to have been with Beto on his last successful trip.

At the same time, one boat that was out with Beto was destroyed when a large tanker rammed into it. Two fishermen jumped just before the collision while the two remaining survived by holding onto floating pieces of the boat until another boat was able to rescue them. The two who jumped are missing. A total of five missing at sea. We are all holding out hope that they will return.

While the fishing in the Philippines is still a top industry, life for fishermen and their catches is becoming harder. Large commercial vessels from China, Taiwan, Vietnam and the Philippines are competing for the decreasing number of fish in deeper and more dangerous waters off the northern coast of Luzon in the South China Sea. Throw into the mix the numerous smaller, traditional bankas that carry at most 8 fishermen using line and hooks and one can begin to appreciate the dangers involved with simply trying to eek out an existence for the small scale fishermen; many of whom never return home in the fast changing weather far from shore.

High winds and wild waves have postponed my journey to the sea for the second day as our small crew decided to delay our 3-5 day trip to the deep sea. We’re all keeping an eye out on the weather and will try again tonight to head out from Bolinao, Pangasinan for what we hope will be a prosperous trip. And a necessary one; they just arrived in port four days ago and already much of the income earned has been spent. Time to turn the boat around see what fortune may bring… Stay tuned for more stories and image of this trip.

‘November 16 represents tragedy for Bangladesh’ i was told by a well dressed man who claimed to have walked since dawn from Barisal; it was now around 3pm and we are stuck between a traffic jam of monumental proportions or heading back against the fallen trees and the thousands returning to their homes after evacuating less than 24 hours before. He was refering to both past and present.

Super Cyclone Sidr had come ashore. At current count, over 1,000 are dead without the worst areas being reached by rescue workers and NGOs. Tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed and much of the country is without power or communications for at least the next three days. The total toll to the economy cannot even be comprehended yet.

Much work will be done over the next few days and the full extent of the damage done by this awesome display of energy will be better known. What is known now however, is that, unlike many years ago in November, Bangladesh was better prepared. Over 130,000 died during the last such storm.

Stay tuned for more updates and slideshows.

The winter months are fast approaching in Bangladesh; one only has to breathe the night air to taste the smoke from the countless fires cropping up on more and more street corners keeping the poor warm. A surprising number of people die each year during the winter months throughout the country from the cold. Add to this a surge of dengue carrying mosquitos and the children in one of the world’s most densely populated and poorest countries are at serious risk.
Thanks to the efforts of Sleeping Children Around the World, a $30 CAD donation provides poor children a sleeping kit which includes locally made clothing, a mosquito net and some school supplies along with a sleeping mat and a blanket. The volunteers of this grassroots Canadian charity gave away 7,500 such kits throughout the country; over 800 per day for two days in Dhaka alone.

Am working on getting a small flash or some other pop-up slideshow to show various aspects of our trip recently to Bhutan. The first is of an archery championship; archery is the national sport of Bhutan and nearly everywhere one travels in the remarkable country, there is a range for ‘playing archery,’ as i am fond of saying. Whether they are using traditional bows made of bamboo or professional compound bows, these guys can shoot.

The other show, once i can get other coding issues figured out, will be posted in the gallery section of the site and will feature general travel photography of Bhutan. We got back a week ago from the 10 day trip, and i must confess that i’m still decompressing a bit; it was truly an amazing experience. There will be more details about this trip - from trekking for 2 days over a 10,000′ pass in the rain while being covered in leeches, to being bit by a stray dog to meeting the Queen of Bhutan. All memorable events and no regrets.

A 10 day adventure in the Himalayas is never a bad thing…

Around Oct. 16 new content should be available, complete with links to photographers, clients and useful resources. A better looking gallery with titled slideshows is coming, as well as a few sub-pages with past portfolios and the latest work (ie. Bhutan).

Stay tuned.

hello all… yes, this is the first post on the slowly evolvoing davidgreedy.com; a site which i am envisioning to include not only my portfolio work, but also an updated slide show where you can see what i’m up to, a slideshow of recent work and other photo-related information. this requires trying out new technologies that i haven’t the faintest idea about, so bugging friends and colleagues to pitch in and help is the way to go… as well as hiring some folks who really know what is up! this may take a little while to work out, but the end result should be worth it. with a birthday coming up later this week, the pressure is on as having slideshows embedded by then would be the best present i can give myself - and something that i can share with you all.

more to come soon, stay tuned, and most importantly - stay patient!
